Villargordo del Cabriel

Villargordo del Cabriel is the westernmost municipality of the Valencian Community and borders with Castilla-La Mancha along the Cabriel River, and was populated by Iberians, Romans and Arabs. Due to its rugged terrain, throughout history there were numerous military confrontations, such as during the War of the Spanish Succession, the War of Independence and the Carlist Wars.

It nests in an extraordinary natural setting shaped by the Cabriel River, renowned as one of Europe's cleanest rivers. Its stunning beauty manifests notably in the Cuchillos and Hoces del Cabriel, areas within the municipality incorporated into the Natural Park bearing the same name. Additionally, the Contreras reservoir, featuring a bridge originating from the mid-nineteenth century, adds to this picturesque environment. Likewise, the traveller on the Utiel-Requena D.O. Wine Route cannot miss the Contreras village, the 1,040-meter-high Pico del Moluengo, the impressive relief of the Barranco de los Altares ravine, the monumental Pino Dos Hermanos, the old traditional exploitation of the Salinas Continentales, as well as three marked and approved short-distance trails.

In addition to the natural resources, visitors can enjoy some buildings of architectural interest, such as the church of San Roque, the Civil War bunkers and trenches or the Isabel II Bridge.

The most important festivities are the Patron Saint Festivities in honour of the Virgin and San Roque, in mid-August, and the Pilgrimage to the Virgen de Tejeda, in September.
